How to Have Comfortable Shoes

Of course notions of width and length are very important to avoid having bad feet in your shoes.

But these aren’t the only ones!

First of all we must have in mind that the foot, from a mechanical perspective is wonderful.

… and so (very) complicated!

Despite all the technological advances we are unable to reproduce.

Remember, Paul Verhoeven, had perfectly illustrated the complexity – and important-the foot in this scene from Robocop:

Classical Comfort Approach: Points Of Contact

During the fitting of a new pair of shoes you walk around, and immediately, you will be able to tell if you’re well inside.

In addition to the length and width consider 3 following sensitive contact points:

  • the big and the little toe joints
  • the hardness of the foothills to the heel
  • under the tongue, at the level of the laces

For the length and the width so that do it not it is not a problem because

  • you have the option to take a size above (see a different manufacturers some width if it is only a problem of width).
  • leather working width so you will win a few millimeters over the ports.

If you have doubts you should know that I wrote a folder to help you determine your shoe size to buy shoes in the right size.

For what is 3 points of contacts, don’t panic: there are a few tips to relieve your precious feet.

For the heel pain and / or toes it is possible that the foothills and / or the tip hard self (t-bar) too rigid.

With your thumb, kneading the sides of the hard tip and the top of the foothills will soften a bit and so to make your shoes more comfortable.

For the pain under the tongue when you tighten the laces the there is no recipe for grandmother. Go see your Shoemaker.

It can add a pad foam below the tab to avoid too much pressure and relieve your foot.

Not sure where to find a cobbler: well we have developed a guide to the best Cobblers of France .

It of the classic part of the comfort.

Let me now turn the comfort of your shoes with criteria much less often talked about.

Hygiene And Comfort

This may seem silly but hygiene plays a normal large in comfort.

The inside of a shoe is a hermetic and confined space in which your feet sweat.

It’s so hot and humid.

It’s the perfect climate for the development of bacteria and other fungi!

These microorganisms can cause painful skin infections and therefore reduce the comfort of shoes.

I’ll spare you the pictures but if you don’t believe me about the pain that can cause foot fungus have a look at the most common: the athlete’s foot and the onyxis.

That’s why it’s important to have a very good foot hygiene.

But I’m not to give you advice of hygiene.

My advice is the material used to make your shoes.

And, there is no secret: Unlike some textiles, leather is a material that “breathes” and therefore promotes heat exchange with the outside.

These exchanges will help avoid the warm-up and the maceration of your feet inside your shoes and so the appearance of microorganisms.

For better hygiene of the feet and therefore greater comfort I advise you to wear shoes in full (ie: top and lining) leather!

The Importance of Socks

The still is something which we do not talk enough.

Yet, the socks have a great importance in comfort!

Depending on the type of shoes and what you plan to do there are more or less appropriate socks.

Remember to choose socks based on these two factors:

  • The time of year that you’re going to wear your shoes (summer, winter, mid-season)
  • the use you plan to make your shoes (leisure, work)

You tell me that this makes sense.

You’re quite right!

If I can be bothered to write it is that, in our showroom, I received several people come, for example, try our workbootswith thin socks in wire from Scotland.

Don’t forget socks matter.

I said it above: the Interior of a shoe is hot and humid. So choose socks made with an absorbent material.

“Put on the head and feet.

This expression of cobbler comes from the conflict – in which we were all face a day – between our desire to wear acomfortable shoes which should also please us.

Unfortunately these two concepts are not always compatible!

I said in other articles and I say it again here: have to admit that a form is not adapted to his feet in the shoes “ready to wear”.

So yes I know the model is beautiful.

Quite you the eye for weeks.

It’s one you want and not another…

But if the form is not appropriate I advise you to go your way.

You’ll see that in use, the pleasant feeling to finally have the shoes you dreamed, will leave very quickly place nervousness related to the pain they cause!

Take advantage also to hunt the idea to, right the first time, be in her shoes as slippers.

It is quite the opposite!

Attention: I’m not saying that it is impossible to find shoes that are comfortable immediately.

I’m saying that it must be wary of this type of footwear (especially in the case of a rigid like a Goodyear or Norwegian)

-For example, the sole leather.

A sole of quality to use a leather tanned very slowly, which is going to be very, very, dense and so very rigid.

It will necessarily take a few ports for your foot brand footprint. The first days with your shoes are not the most pleasant.
Note: this is why, we recommend that you first wear your shoes a few hours at home before start you a day full.

Vice versa a stiff leather sole, it’s leather with a low density of fibers that will wear out much more quickly.

Yet, with this kind of leather, comfort is almost immediate, because there is no need “to do.”

-Take a second example:

the material used to fill the void between the first Assembly and the outsole.
Note: If you do not see what it is to take the time to read the article explaining the different layouts of our shoes .

If it’s made with real Cork, the still, it will take a few ports to make the material the imprint of your foot.

Yet, know that it is possible to use other much more flexible materials, which will not have the life expectancy of the Cork and as often, which are much less expensive.

Except that their flexibility will allow almost immediate comfort for your feet!

Also remember that the leather, turned on when mounting on form, will relax a bit with time. It will be less rigid and will marry the shape of your feet. But not immediately.

A very soft leather will allow a better feeling of the first fitting. Unfortunately, in the long term, this kind of leather may SAG and your shoes will more resemble very much.

I does not detail the rest (the sons of the bottom tension, tense Assembly or more released the stem on the form, etc.) but tell you that there are plenty of details that affect the comfort during the fitting and the first ports.

So no: a comfortable shoe from the fitting is not necessarily good!

It may be a shoe whose sole is made with a little dense leather, a low mounting seams voltage, a too soft leather, a shoddy pad, a buttress and a hard end with bad material.

It’s all the complexity: it must be able to find out if the form need you and at the same time take into account the evolution of the materials over the ports.

Because the goal is always the same: keep your shoes for as long as possible! Because the longer you keep them more leather patina and becomes beautiful and they are comfortable.
Note: I have described the evolution of my sensations over time in an article entitled: make the shoes is it necessary? Feel free to go read.

You’ll understand the notion of comfort is more complex than a simple: “it’s too small or is too short.”

As in most everyone likes to wear his shoes in a special way: tight and who maintain good foot, a little further, etc. we could spend hours on the topic!
