History of Alta, Wyoming
Alta, Wyoming is a small rural town located in the Big Horn Basin of northern Wyoming. It was established in 1882 when the Union Pacific Railroad Company built a line through the area. The railroad brought settlers to the area and Alta soon became an important trading center for farmers and ranchers.
The town was named after Alta, Utah, which is located just across the state line. Over time, Alta grew to become one of the most important towns in the region, providing goods and services to those living in the surrounding countryside.
In its early days, Alta was home to large ranches and farms that produced cattle, sheep and wheat. The town also had a large mercantile store that provided essential goods such as clothing and food supplies to local residents. A post office was also opened in 1886 that allowed mail service between Alta and other towns throughout Wyoming.
In 1889, an irrigation system was constructed to bring water from nearby streams and rivers into the town’s fields and gardens, enabling farmers to produce more crops than ever before. This allowed for increased economic development as well as population growth in Alta over the next few decades.
By 1900, Alta had grown into a bustling community with a population of around 500 people plus several businesses including two banks, two hotels, five churches and many other stores such as blacksmiths, livery stables, general stores and saloons.
In 1906, an electric company opened up shop in town bringing electricity to all of its buildings for lighting purposes; this led to even more growth within the community as it made life easier for everyone living there.
Alta continued growing during World War I when it became home to several military training camps which brought new life into town as well as additional business opportunities such as restaurants and stores selling war-related items like uniforms or equipment for soldiers.
During World War II, many young men from Alta were sent overseas; when they returned many decided not to stay but instead move on elsewhere due to lack of job opportunities within their hometown or simply because they wanted something different out of life than what their hometown could offer them at that time; this led to a decrease in population within Alta during this period but it soon recovered after peace was declared at war’s end due mainly because of its strategic location along major transportation routes like highways or railroads connecting it with cities like Salt Lake City or Denver which provided jobs for returning veterans or those looking for work outside their hometowns .
Today, Alta is still a small rural town with a population under 500 people but it still remains an important hub of commerce throughout northern Wyoming thanks largely due its convenient location along major transportation routes plus its abundance of natural resources such as coal mines located nearby which provide employment opportunities for local.
