The different types of leather

There are numerous types of leather, which are distinguished by the species that provide the leather, after use, the type of tanning and the dyeing technique. The most common animal leathers are pigskin, cowhide and lambskin leather, which related almost exclusively animal species used for the production of leather, which are bred for meat production.

The type of leather dye, a distinction is made to deck-dyed or pigment-stained and dyed leather, among others. The latter also aniline leather is called and distinguishes itself by its natural and porous surface structure.

The coloured leather is the higher quality because of its finer structure, is however more prone to soiling and fading light. Deck-coloured leather work in its surface made smooth and none or hardly characteristic leather characteristics such as scars or small mistakes. They are very suitable for high-gloss polishing but less for a fundamentally new color composition. Deck-coloured leather find themselves often in the lower price segments, as well as many expensive designer labels. Today given a lack of high-quality leathers, the deck-stained leather are widely used, since small errors can be more easily conceal.

Therefore, supposedly the same leather may react differently to care. Because leather is a natural product can occur to many factors are influencing each other, providing a shoe care experts always new challenges.

Here is still a simple test to distinguish it from deck – and dyed leather: A drop of water does not move in with deck-tanned leather, he stops on the leather and pearls (fig. 1).

When dyed or porous leather, a drop of water moves slowly into the leather and is as long as visible as a dark spot until it is dry (fig. 2-4).

Care for a better level of comfort

The breathability of dyed leather is about 90 percent, with deck-tanned leather, however, only at about 20 percent. This affects also the climate of comfort and the comfort of the shoes. To protect the leather and thus its breathability from humidity and mechanical influences, wafer-thin wax layers are applied and extended with various brushes and techniques and finely polished. High-quality welted shoes performs this elaborate method of shoe makers by hand.
